There are lots of medical terms related to fatty liver disease. The main medical term NAFLD refers to a fatty liver that is not related to alcohol use. NAFLD is further divided into two groups. Non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFL), otherwise known as simple fatty liver, or non-alcoholic steatohepatitis.

Being overweight, having insulin resistance or high blood cholesterol having diabetes increase risk for fatty liver. Eating habits and low physical activity also increase the risk.

What are the symptoms of fatty liver?

Fatty liver typically has no associated symptoms. You may experience fatigue or abdominal discomfort. Your liver may become slightly enlarged, which can be detected during a physical examination.

How is fatty liver diagnosed?

If your liver is inflamed, doctor may be able to detect it by examining the abdomen for an enlarged liver. However, your liver can be inflamed without being enlarged. If you experience fatigue or loss of appetite, you should inform your doctor.

Healthy nutrition and lifestyle are essential for both prevention and treatment. While overweight patients are advised to reach ideal body weight, weight loss should be gradually.
